S.B. 0849 (2025): Amends Tennessee Code Title 63, which requires the board of medical examiners, the board of osteopathic examination, and the board of examiners in psychology to each develop and offer an optional course in maternal mental health to, instead, require the department of health to collaborate with an organization in the state that is approved by the board and accredited as a sponsor of continuing medical education to create or identify a maternal mental health continuing education program. The program should cover: best practices in screening for maternal mental health disorders; the range of maternal mental health disorders; the range of evidence-based treatment options, including the importance of allowing a mother to be involved in developing the treatment plan; and, for an obstetrician or a primary care physician, when to consult with a psychiatrist versus making a referral.

Non- Legislative Task Force

The Tennessee Maternal Mental Health Taskforce is a collaborative of individuals and organizations committed to advancing policies and initiatives that continuously improve maternal mental health access to care and treatment. The goal of this task force is to address the current gap in available and accessible Maternal Mental Health services through stakeholder collaboration and partnerships, knowledge from those with lived experience, and dedication to ensuring all Tennesseans have access to life-saving, necessary resources.
